BIOTOPY

Biotopy is a collaborative project by Will Freudenheim, Wendi Yan and Darren Zhu. R&D also included major contributions by Jessica Shand and Omar Rizwan.

Biotopy is a biotic game and interactive installation that speculates a more playful and collective mode of scientific discovery. By connecting bioreactors to game engines, it synthesizes scientific methods with gameplay mechanics.

Players act as citizen scientists, growing and interacting with microbial cultures to sustain a virtual creature. The project functions as a mediating interface between biological systems and digital simulation, generating a novel space for both play and research.

Biotopy asks:
How can crowd curiosity be harnessed in knowledge production?
How can biotic agents participate in playful interaction?

How might we cultivate a more expansive scientific self?

Artists

  • WILL FREUDENHEIM is an artist and game designer based in New York. He builds game worlds to stage playful interactions between humans, computational systems, and living organisms, exploring cognition, collective behavior, and new forms of collaboration. He treats play as a window into how we think: games can get us to inhabit new modes of perception and reasoning through experience rather than explanation.
He is co-founder of Laser Days, an experimental worldbuilding studio creating films, installations, and live performances using real-time technologies. The studio collaborates with fine artists including Anicka Yi and Tishan Hsu, and has worked with musicians and commercial agencies around the world. Their animated short Acid City, a sci-fi climate documentary, premieres in the Rotterdam International Film Festival in January 2026.
Previously, he was a Studio Researcher at Antikythera, a think-tank investigating planetary computation. He holds a degree from MIT's Comparative Media Studies program. He is a long-time collaborator with the Trust community, with whom he created the game Hivemind for Serpentine Galleries R&D.
He co-edited Interplay (2024) with William Morgan, a book examining emergent forms of intelligence through game design.

  • WENDI YAN constructs speculative epistemologies through research-driven worldbuilding and metafictional simulation, using CGI, game engines, and documentary practices to probe and play with the artifice of knowledge.

The Grand Prix recipient of the 6th VH Award by Hyundai Motor Group (2025), Wendi has exhibited at international institutions including ArtScience Museum (Singapore), HEK (Basel), Ujazdowski Castle CCA (Warsaw) and Hyundai Motorstudio (Beijing). She holds an A.B. in History of Science from Princeton University and a M.S. in Fiction and Entertainment from SCI-Arc. She was an inaugural member of the Steve Jobs Archive Fellowship (2023) and the inaugural resident at A24 Labs (2026). Parallel to her studio practice, Wendi directs Research Revival, an experimental fund restoring forgotten research into active circulation.

Wendi is based in New York.

  • DARREN ZHU is a synthetic biologist and metascientist based in San Francisco. He explores the epistemic and aesthetic implications of emerging technologies, particularly as they pertain to scientific discovery and creativity. Through a mix of video essay, interactive installation, and experimental documentary, his creative work plays at the boundary of the natural versus artificial and scientific versus speculative.

Darren was a member of Antikythera at the Berggruen Institute, a Creative Science member of NEW INC at the New Museum, and resident at MESH Studio in the Digital Architectures Lab. His work has been supported by the Thiel Foundation, Gates Foundation, Ethereum Foundation, and Protocol Labs. Currently, he is the founder of a new consumer biotech startup, Culture.

ESSAY ABOUT >>BIOTOPY<< BY WENDI YAN IN THE BOOK >>INTERPLAY<< PUBLISHED BY CALDO WORLDWIDE

The book Interplay examines five unique experiments in the field of game design –Schema, Vivarium, Biotopy, Interplay and Nephila. In the course of the book, each is explored as a vehicle to apprehend the unconventional configurations of intelligences that are today emerging from innovations occurring within the field of game design.

To ongoing debates about emerging technologies, namely artificial intelligence and biotechnology, this book contributes the novel hypothesis that interaction sites between human and non-human intelligences, be they human, collective, biotic, synthetic or environmental, are already proliferating according to developments in game design. In short, new genera and species of interactions and of intelligences are already present in playful experiments.

This book tracks the evolution of five such intelligence experiments, not unlike a set of petridishes with variant initial conditions. In doing so, what the book offers is not a unified theory of ‘play in the age of AI’, but rather a multifaceted account of how intelligences form and emerge through and across playful interaction surfaces, spaces and dynamics.

The idea for this book came up with the artist, game designer, and researcher Will Freudenheim's exhibition Schema (December 2023 - May 2024). The idea developed into a collaborative work with the philosopher of technology, William Morgan, and with Will Freudenheim complementing the publication with other self-developed games and sharing their insightful knowledge and ideas alongside co-authors Flora Weil, Wendi Yan, Doug Stark, and Sylvan Rackham.
